The Ultimate Guide to Bar Stool Types and Styles

It's difficult to imagine any kitchen without a bar stool area these days. The addition of the bar stools and table to the modern kitchen layout has made cooking when you have friends or family over a social activity. It's obvious why they have become so popular.

What are Bar stools?

First, let's discuss a few bar stool basics since this subject needs more clarity. The term "bar stool" refers to stools of three main heights: counter stools, bar stools, and spectator stools (also known as "stadium stools").

A counter stool like this is designed to be paired with a counter that is 91 cm high. A counter stool's seat height ranges from 60 to 66 cm. In most kitchens, bar stools are used at a counter that has been stepped up, usually with a 107 cm high counter rather than a 91 cm high counter. Pub tables are also most commonly paired with bar-height stools, which typically measure 76 cm in seat height. The third category, the spectator stool, is also the tallest. Seat height ranges from 86-91 cm because they are designed for use on 121 cm high tables or counters. Stools of this type are used when extra height is required, such as when viewing television.

What makes bar stools different from chairs?

Despite their many similarities, bar stools and chairs differ in many ways due to their different functions. Below are the two differences.

Seat Heights

The obvious difference between the two is their height, which is due to the different locations they are intended for. Most dining chairs are fixed at dining table height for use in kitchens, restaurants, offices, and other places. Usually, measuring between 43 and 48 cm from the ground, for a comfortable fit. Dining tables are generally 75 cm high. In contrast, a bar stool is typically used in nightclubs, beauty salons, and medical practices. Commercial bars should use 75-80 cm high stools, while home bar stools measure 65-70 cm seat height.

Backrest Height

Kitchen tables serve many purposes, and chairs are often used longer than bar stools. Furthermore, we sit on them differently, so our posture has influenced their design. A higher backrest is needed since they tend to lean back. They also typically have more padding and upholstery for extended periods of sitting.

On the other hand, bar stools do not need a large backrest since we tend to lean forward and rest our elbows on the counter. In addition, stools are often more compact, which fits their purpose perfectly. Even though chairs are generally bigger, they provide a wide variety of stackable designs for tidy storage.
